What Is Your Definition of Success?
For everybody, Success is a great thing that we want to taste over and over again and try to reproduce in all facets of our life. Set a goal, work hard at something and see what we have been working toward come to fruition… it is so fulfilling and rewarding isn’t it?
One day, one of my friends asked me to give him my own definition of the word “success”. My natural answer was “Have a big & beautiful family, Be passionate about my job, Live in NYC”. Now I challenge you to ask a person (or even yourself) to answer this same question, I’m not sure that the answer would be the same. Actually, each person uses different terms to define « success », and according to the perception of life you get, it evolves. I mean when I was young I would have said “be a famous dancer”, maybe you “be a rock star” or “be the king of the school playground”, everybody had and has expectations, dreams, and like the success, it grows up with your mind.
So what makes the difference between an average person and person who stands out above the crowd?
1. Be faithful
To achieve something in your career (or in your life, it works obviously as well) – you have first to believe. You need to believe in yourself that you are able to achieve this thing. Once your mind is persuaded that you can do it, nothing becomes impossible. Believe in what you’re doing but also feel it. When what you think, feel and do becomes one, nothing can stop you from achieving career success.
2. Be Disciplined
Believing is such a main point but believing alone will not lead you to achieve something – you have to do in order to make things move. Nevertheless doing in itself is not sufficient to reach the chances of success. You need to get a perfect self-control, a certain regulation in your act – “Failing to plan is planning to fail” – Lot of people fails because they don’t have this component. Be disciplined; focus on the step right in front of you and giving it everything you can. Each day is a new day with plenty of decisions to make, plenty of things to think, and we sometimes tend to lose our goal. Protect yourself from temptations, imagine alternatives and find the right balance in your life. By separating what is essential from what is not, you will find yourself achieving your goals faster, and find yourself doing more of what you expected.
3. Be Persistent
Discipline also ensures that you can be persistent. Nothing worth achieving comes without a price. Success consists of going from failure to failure without loss of passion. Don’t look at difficulties such as something that you are unable to overcome but more such as a kind of opportunity to progress. Practice compassion with yourself. All of us make mistakes so be kind. Success is never final and failure is never incurable, courage is what counts. When what you want does not happen, don’t give up, keep moving forward. Learn from your mistake, this is the best way to improve yourself. Every challenging situation can offer us a life lesson. Don’t forget that the important is your will to achieve, no matter things you’re not able to do.
“Nothing in this world can take the place of persistence. Talent will not; nothing is more common than unsuccessful people with talent. Genius will not; unrewarded genius is almost a proverb. Education will not; the world is full of educated derelicts. Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent” – Calvin Coolidge
4. Be Passionate
As we saw before, success generally requires hard effort, persistence and discipline. All of these things could seem to be very overwhelming unless you are passionate about the task at hand. Successful people have a strong sense of passion – They are aware that it drives them to succeed. Passion is the crucial element which will give you the strength to overcome obstacles and go beyond your limits. Whatever you are pursuing, make sure that you feel passionate about it. If you have not yet found your passion, find people who have. Surround yourselves with great people—people that are constructive, encouraging, inspiring, talented, and successful. You will see by yourself that this kind of people have the ability for inspiring and leading others in a vision much bigger than those people can dream on their own. Their enthusiasm will be infectious – get other people like you excited about the possibilities. Their secret? They understand that in order to achieve, they must love what they do. So find something that you love to do and you will be following your passion. « Do what you Love » – Steve Jobs.
We all have the capacity to get these 4 qualities; you don’t have to be smart to master them. Being brilliant can definitely helps but, it won’t get the job done. For a long time, I have had a fake picture of what really were successful people – only smart person. “Damn I will never be one of them”. Now I have come to realize that successful people often don’t possess a lot of knowledge, they simply are totally focused on achieving what they planned to do. Good news for the rest of us: we don’t need a great deal of knowledge to be successful!
I can’t deny that applying these 4 traits into practice is not as easy as it sounds. You need to work to develop these behaviors, and you will sometimes have to break old habits – easy to say, I know. Moreover, don’t believe that by changing some of your behaviors or doing better thing will directly bring you acknowledgment, or a promotion. Learn to be patient. Most of people get discouraged by expecting everybody to immediately notice the positive changes they have made. Allow time to work to your gain. The truth is that the more you expect from yourself, the more you will be able to achieve.
Remember that some people dream of success… while others wake up and work hard at it. Be a “realistic optimist”: Don’t limit yourself – Dream big, Think big – But stay rational.
Destiny is not a matter of chance; it is a matter of choice. If you want to be successful, it’s just this simple: Know what you’re doing. Love what you’re doing. And believe in what you’re doing.
